Restoring dignity and unlocking the potential of Tanzania’s single mothers

Across Tanzania, thousands of single mothers carry the weight of raising families alone. They provide for children, fuel local economies, and hold communities together—yet they often face stigma, rejection, gender-based violence, and limited access to markets or opportunities.

Malkia Hodari, meaning Powerful Queens, is Elimu Foundation’s flagship program to empower single mothers with dignity, skills, safety, and voice.

✨ What We Do

We believe that when single mothers:

  • Know their worth and understand their rights
  • Access market-ready skills and economic opportunities
  • Are linked to safe spaces and protection systems

They can transform their lives, their children’s futures, and the way society perceives them.

Through Malkia Hodari, we integrate all of Elimu Foundation’s strengths and programs into one pathway:

  • Skills & Training – Practical courses in business, packaging, digital marketing, pastry and bakery (in partnership with Noble Trust College).
  • Livelihood Assets – Access to beekeeping hives and equipment via Mama Nyuki.
  • Safety & Rights – Awareness sessions on GBV/SEA, survivor-centered reporting, and legal referrals.
  • Mentorship & Markets – Business mentors, digital campaigns, and buyer linkages.
  • Education for Children – Scholarships and school support through Ndoto Fund.

🌍 Why It Matters

Single mothers are not victims—they are leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers. By restoring their dignity and unlocking their potential, Malkia Hodari contributes to:

  • Higher family incomes and business resilience
  • Safer, more confident women who stand against GBV/SEA
  • Children staying in school and breaking cycles of poverty
  • Shifting cultural perceptions from stigma to respect
